Organic Painted Pony Bush Bean Seeds

A darling versatile dual-purpose bean with long, thin, stringless pods, named for its mottled appearance. A great stringless, long, thin snap bean when young. The dry bean have a  rich and nutty in flavor, is wonderful for soups or over rice and will keep its beautiful bi-colored markings when cooked.  Also makes for a perfect snap bean.  This one receives many ohhs and ahhs when seen for the first time. Productive and strong!

Enjoy fresh, steamed or roasted.  Can be canned and frozen as well!

Preparation tips:

For snap beans, trim the ends and wash thoroughly before lightly braising with garlic and tossing with bacon. They can also be added to salads or served with dip or hummus as an appetizer.

For dry beans, try them in your favorite baked beans recipe or pair them with corn, chilies, cumin, garlic, cilantro, fresh cheeses, and bitter greens.

Growing Tips:

Do not plant in cold wet soil. Soak seeds in water for 30 minutes and add an inoculant before planting. Mulch at base of plants and keep weeds at bay. Use tipi, corn, or trellis for support.

When starting seeds indoors, it is key that your new starts be hardened off.  This is a process that requires taking them outside during the day, for a period of time, before they are planted. This acclimates your seedlings to the outside world, meaning the elements like the wind and sun. We do it for several weeks to a month as this strengthens their stems and overall plant structure.

  • Start for a short period of time initially, then graduate to more time each day
  • One week minimum is recommended
  • Bring them inside in the early evening and overnight
  • Keep an eye on them and constantly water them. Make sure they have not blown over.
